Knights Of Columbus Finally Goes Paperless
I thought all major insurance and financial companies had gone paperless for quite some time, but I was wrong.  One of the oldest fraternal benefit societies Knights Of Columbus (KOC) has decided to “image 1.8 million insurance documents” according to nationalunderwriter.com.  These documents were stored on two floors of their 22 story headquarters in New Haven, Conn.  The enormous weight of these documents was actually threatening the structural safety of the floors.

KOC took 6 months to find the proper vendors for document capture, image repository, retrieval software and workflow.  Once these companies were found the next obstacle involved finding “enough physical office space for the file scanning operation staffed by 22 people from Pitney Bowes and the in-house scanning operation that required space for 19 people.”

This entire process will take until 2007 to complete freeing up two entire floors for better use.  A little behind the times but KOC is finally entering the 21st century.

Knights of the future.

I wonder how much they may be able to save in Real Estate costs -- or on the structural damage repair costs. It may be a lot higher than the scanning effort.

Still, about 50 employees for two years is a lot of money! Millions!

Jose, I appreciate the comment. My guess is they are saving not only money long-term but avaiding a potential disaster if all or some of those documents were destroyed. I was surprised it took them this long to digitize their paperwork considering so many other major insurance companies have done so for awhile now.

I agree they are putting out millions of dollars over several years to make sure this effort is finished. This investment of time and money will surely pay off for them in easier access to documents and more space. Actually as I write this they are scanning away document after document.

Again thanks for the comment .
